Her post in Waltham began in October and with her enthusiasm and warm demeanor, she seems to be settling right in. Tarlecky is excited about her new role and the opportunity to explore a new region of the country with her two young daughters, who are also active in the community and regulars at the YMCA. Her oldest daughter will attend kindergarten at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in the fall.
Tarlecky notes that each YMCA is reflective of the community in which it is located. “The core programs and the mission are the same, but the Y has the ability to morph and meet the needs of the individual community,” she reveals. I get personal pleasure out of seeing it develop.”
The YMCA in Waltham has a laser focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in the surrounding towns including Waltham, Lexington, Watertown, Belmont and Arlington. Tarlecky, an avid traveler, is dedicated to the organization’s mission and genuinely cares about the community.
It’s only fitting that a community-driven organization would partner with another mainstay in the community to provide events designed to enrich and engage area residents. “Belmont Savings Bank is a huge partner to us,” Tarlecky shares. “They help us provide free events to the community. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to do that.”
A few of the free events designed to draw residents into the community are the Halloween Spooktacular, complete with a haunted maze and prizes; the Holiday Extravaganza featuring Santa reading a story to the children; and ongoing Tuesday evening events.
Three employees from the bank serve on the YMCA Board of Trustees, supplying invaluable guidance, feedback and fundraising support. The bank offers Waltham Community Rewards Checking accounts, designed to fund programs at the YMCA. When an individual opens one of these accounts, the account owner and the YMCA receive matching gifts of $50 from the bank. In addition, 0.25% of the account’s annual interest goes to the YMCA.*
The funds go to the YMCA’s Annual Support Account, which provides financial assistance to members of the community. Last year the organization gifted $275,000 in direct financial assistance. “This was made possible by our donors, including Belmont Savings,” Tarlecky said.
